Dr. Vandana Kumar is a Diplomate in Oral and Maxillofacial radiology and currently holds a position of
Associate Professor in the division of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the Department of Oncology
and Diagnostic Sciences at University of Maryland (UMSOD), Baltimore, MD. She has served at
University of Missouri Kansas City school of dentistry in the Department of Oral Pathology, Oral
Medicine and Oral Radiology for 12 years before joining her present position at UMSOD.
Dr. Kumar is an internationally qualified specialist who received her first dental degree (BDS) from
Maharishi Dayanand University-Rohtak, India in 1991 and her specialty degree in Conservative Dentistry
and Endodontics from Guru Nanak Dev University-Amritsar, India in 1996. She worked as a consultant of
Endodontics in Abu Dhabi, UAE for 8 years before moving to United states in 2003. She earned her MS in
Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology from UNC Chapel Hill in 2007, and shortly after earned her diplomat
status from the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. She also earned her DDS from
University of Missouri Kansas City in 2009.
Dr. Kumar is an elected officer at the executive council of American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial
Radiology and currently serves as Councilor of Education Affairs. She has also served as the president of
the special section of oral and maxillofacial radiology of ADEA. She has given many presentations and
continuing education courses at national and international meetings and has authored numerous
articles and abstracts in national and international journals. She serves as the adhoc reviewer to journal
of DMFR, JDE and Angle Orthodont. She is the recipient of AAOMR Williams H Rollins Award for
outstanding research project and American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Centennial
Award. Her current interest and area of research include enhancing oral radiology curriculum in pre-and
post-doctoral level and CBCT interpretation, increasing awareness of radiation hygiene and exploring
artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled clinical decision support systems (CDSSs).
