Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Programs

OMR postdoctoral programs are offered at 9 universities in the United States and one university in Canada. These programs are about 2-5 years in length and lead to a certificate of training or an advanced degree (MS or PhD). Curricula include extensive course work in radiation physics, biology, and protection; imaging technology and computer-based image evaluation; and interpretation of conventional radiographic images as well as advanced modalities including CT, plain tomography, MRI, subtraction radiography, and cone beam computed tomography. Diagnosis of head and neck disease is emphasized in hospital radiology rotations. Residents also receive a strong background in head and neck anatomy, clinical and microscopic pathology, oral medicine, and research methods. Teaching assignments in undergraduate dental radiology courses are often required. The education obtained in graduate OMR programs prepares the resident to sit for the Diplomate examination of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.
